Overview

Dark Matter Labs (“Company,” “we,” “us,” or “our”) is the company that developed and operates the EPIC Writing App website and desktop application. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, disclose, and protect personal information when you visit the EPIC Writing App website, create an account, purchase a license, download or use the desktop application, or otherwise interact with our services.

EPIC is a desktop application. Your creative content — stories, world-building data, maps, characters, notes, and all other project data — is stored locally on your device. We do not collect, store, access, or transmit your creative work.

In addition to this Privacy Policy, you should also review our Terms of Service and End User License Agreement (EULA).

Section 1

Information We Collect

We collect information in the following categories:

  • Account information: When you create an account through Clerk, we may receive your Clerk user ID, email address, display name, and account timestamps.
  • Purchase and license information: When you purchase a license through Lemon Squeezy, we may receive order information, transaction status, license key information, plan details, activation count, and activation limit.
  • Device and download information: We may collect download logs including user ID, platform, version, and timestamp.
  • Support and communications: If you contact us, we may collect the information you provide in that communication.
  • Technical and security information: We may process limited technical information for security, fraud prevention, debugging, and rate limiting, including data needed for Upstash-based rate limiting.

Section 2

Information We Do Not Collect

We do not intentionally collect passwords, because authentication is handled by Clerk. We do not process payment card details directly, because payments are handled by Lemon Squeezy. We also do not store your personal content from the desktop app on our servers, and we do not have access to your locally stored API keys or the content saved on your device unless you explicitly transmit it to a third-party service through the app.

Section 3

How We Use Information

We use personal information to:

  • Create and manage user accounts.
  • Process purchases, issue licenses, and verify activations.
  • Provide, operate, maintain, and improve the website and app.
  • Enforce rate limits and protect against fraud, abuse, and unauthorized access.
  • Send transactional messages such as purchase confirmations, license notices, and support replies.
  • Comply with legal obligations and resolve disputes.

We do not use your information for advertising, behavioral profiling, or selling to third parties.

Section 4

Third-Party Services

We use the following third-party providers to help operate our business:

  • Clerk — for authentication and account management.
  • Lemon Squeezy — for payments, licenses, and related commerce functions.
  • Upstash — for rate limiting and anti-abuse controls.
  • Supabase — for internal data storage and operational analytics based on webhook data.
  • Cloudflare R2 — for file storage and download-related infrastructure.
  • Third-party AI providers (Anthropic, OpenAI, OpenRouter, Replicate, etc.) — only when you choose to enter your own API key or use a cloud AI feature.

Section 5

Your Own API Keys and Local Data

Some features of the desktop application allow you to use your own API keys from third-party AI providers. Those keys are stored on your own computer and are not accessible to us. Content you create inside the application is saved on your device unless you choose to export it or transmit it to another service. You are responsible for any data you send to third-party providers using your own keys or external accounts.

Section 6

Cookies and Similar Technologies

Our website may use cookies or similar technologies for essential functions such as login sessions, security, and preferences. If we use any non-essential cookies, such as analytics or marketing tools, we will provide notice and, where required by law, obtain consent before placing them.

You can learn more in our separate Cookie Policy, which explains what cookies we use, why we use them, and how you can control them.

The desktop Software does not use cookies or tracking technologies of any kind.

Section 7

Legal Bases for Processing

Where GDPR or UK GDPR applies, we process personal information only when we have a valid legal basis, which may include:

  • Performance of a contract.
  • Compliance with legal obligations.
  • Legitimate interests, such as preventing fraud, securing our services, and improving reliability.
  • Consent, where required for optional cookies or optional communications.

Section 8

Sharing and Disclosure

We do not sell your personal information. We may share personal information with service providers and processors that help us run the business, as described above. We may also disclose information if required by law, to protect our rights, to respond to lawful requests, to investigate fraud or security issues, or in connection with a business transfer such as a merger, acquisition, or asset sale.

Section 9

International Users

Our services may be available worldwide, and your information may be processed in countries outside your own. Where required, we use appropriate safeguards for cross-border transfers and processing. By using our website or app, you understand that your data may be processed in jurisdictions with different privacy laws than your own.

Section 10

Data Retention

We retain personal information for as long as reasonably necessary to provide the services, maintain records, comply with legal obligations, resolve disputes, enforce agreements, and prevent fraud or abuse. We may keep license, purchase, and account records for a period necessary to support the lifetime of the product, audits, accounting, and compliance needs.

Section 11

Your Rights

Depending on where you live, you may have rights to:

  • Access the personal data we hold about you.
  • Request correction of inaccurate personal data.
  • Request deletion of your personal data and account.
  • Opt out of marketing communications at any time.
  • Object to or restrict certain processing.

California users may have additional rights under California law. UK and EU users may have additional rights under applicable data protection laws. To exercise any of these rights, please contact us.

Section 12

Children's Privacy

Our services are not directed to children under 18 without adult supervision and permission. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children for marketing purposes, and we expect parents or guardians to supervise any minor who uses the app, especially AI text and image generation features. If you believe a child has provided personal information without proper authorization, contact us so we can review and address it.

Section 13

Security

We use reasonable administrative, technical, and organizational safeguards designed to protect personal information. However, no method of transmission or storage is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security. Because all project data is stored locally on your device, you are responsible for the security and backup of your own files.

Section 14

Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. The updated version will be posted on our website with a revised effective date. Your continued use of the services after an update means you acknowledge the revised policy to the extent permitted by law.
